Policy and Clinical Effectiveness in Paediatric Dentistry

All healthcare workers want to provide the best possible care for their patients but, in common with other health professionals, dentists have a dilemma of choosing between newly discovered techniques and traditional beliefs. Therefore, it is necessary to establish a standard for dental practitioners to follow so that the high quality of care for the patients, especially children, can be maintained and improved. The original 'Audit' committee was formed as a sub group of the Consultants' in Paediatric Dentistry Group by request of the Faculty of Dental Surgery who had, in turn, been asked to organise this by the Department of Health. It was later named the 'Clinical Effectiveness Committee' to reflect it's wider role in development of Clinical Guidelines, audit recipes etc.

Clinical guidelines were produced following an extensive appraisal of current research with the aim of giving practitioners a guideline for best practice when exercising their clinical judgement. The 'audit recipes' were produced as a tool to help practitioners formally assess their own standard of care.

The Policy Committee of BSPD had the similar aim of improving the quality of dental care in children. Its objective was to produce policy documents detailing the most appropriate care for children which health care workers could consult.

In 2003, these two committees were merged to the present Policy and Clinical Effectiveness Committee in Paediatric Dentistry. The roles of the committee are to:

  • develop clinical guidelines

  • develop policy documents

  • develop quality standards for the Specialty

  • represent the Society and Specialty on the Royal College of Surgeons Faculty of Dental Surgery Clinical Effectiveness Committee

  • keep the Society and it's Specialist groups (Consultants Group and Specialist's Branch) informed of developments associated with Clinical Effectiveness

  • co-ordinate national clinical audits for the speciality

  • produce and distribute the Clinical Effectiveness Bulletin
